How to invoice as a freelancer in British Columbia
British Columbia is not Ontario. GST and PST are different taxes. The invoice still has to name you, number the bill, and tell them how to pay.

Vancouver and Victoria clients still bounce unnumbered Word files. Fix that first: the Canada freelancer invoice is the base. Then do not paste an Ontario 13% HST line onto a B.C. job.
B.C. is not an HST province. GST is federal. PST is provincial, and it does not apply to every supply the way HST often does in Ontario. Whether you charge GST, PST, both, or neither is a registration and place-of-supply question — not a template choice.
This is not tax advice. Read CRA GST/HST for businesses and B.C.’s PST guidance, or ask an accountant.
What to put on the B.C. invoice
- Everything in what to put on an invoice.
- If you collect GST, break it out and print your BN. See GST/HST on an invoice — the documentary idea is the same even when the rate is GST, not HST.
- If you collect PST, show it as its own figure. Do not invent a combined “tax” percentage that AP cannot map to a return.
- Currency CAD unless the contract is actually USD.
- How to pay: Interac is still the default for a lot of B.C. sole operators. Print it.

Frequently asked questions
- Should a B.C. invoice show HST?
- Usually no. B.C. is not an HST province. GST is federal; PST is provincial and does not apply to every supply. Do not paste an Ontario 13% line onto a Vancouver job.
- Can justIssued print GST and PST as two statutory taxes?
- justIssued stores one tax percentage per invoice. That is enough for a single GST line. A GST+PST matrix is a different product — ask your accountant before you pick software.
- Is CAD required on the invoice?
- Label the currency you actually contracted. Most B.C. domestic work is CAD. A label is not a foreign-exchange engine.
